Challenges in railrad applications – safety, standards and availability

The requirements for sensors in the rail vehicle sector are diverse and demanding. Increasing RAMS requirements as well as integration into modern train protection systems such as ETCS, CBTC or PTC present complex challenges for manufacturers and operators alike.

Added to this are high mechanical loads from vibration, shock and extreme temperatures that act permanently on the sensors deployed during operation. At the same time, stringent EMC requirements must be met, while the limited installation space in the bogie significantly restricts the available design margin.

Last but not least, the replacement of legacy sensors that are no longer available presents operators with the challenge of ensuring proven functionality with modern technology – without disrupting ongoing operations.

Automatic train protection and odometry

For brake control, encoders for wheel slide protection enable precise speed acquisition, allowing speed deviations and impending wheel lockup to be detected at an early stage.
